1952 - Reno, NV. Bill Fong, a Chinese businessman from Oakland, California received a gaming license for the New China Club. The Club was located at 260 Lake Street, and catered to Asian and African American customers. In September of 1958 Fong held a contest to crown a "Keno Queen"; Mrs. Ruby Roberts was the contest winner. On December 31, 1971, the gaming license at the New China Club expired, and the business closed. |
2008 - Las Vegas, NV. Bob Maheu died at age 90. He was best known as the alter-ego of billionaire businessman Howard Hughes. In the late 1960s, Maheu helped the reclusive Hughes acquire Las Vegas Strip hotel-casinos, which began to rid the town of its mob influence and usher in the corporate age of gaming in Southern Nevada. |
